I think some tips on how to take nature photography would be a good series of post. This post will deal with some ideas on how to get perspective. It sounds easy. You see a great view. You take your camera out. You take the photograph and when you get home and download it it just does not have that same WOW factor.
So what went wrong? The camera cannot take in everything that you can. What you as the nature photographer can do is isolate many photographs from the larger image. What does that mean? Well take a macro lens and go for some closeup photography. The butterfly that is there that is lost in a large panoramic image. Then try a zoom lens and go for a tree with the creek with good angle. Then put the wide angle lens on and go for the panaramic shot.
After you take these shots look at them and see the different perspectives it gave you. The image above could easily have been taken with a wide angle lens say a 35mm. This would have taken in a lot more of the surrounding area (and I assure you it would not have been the same, people in the background, a dark dingy looking water area..). The image I have here is with a 100mm – 400mm lens (a must if you want to start doing serious bird photography and this would be the entry level) and kept the goose image with the flowers and keeping the overall artistic image in mind. A macro would be great for taking interesting images of the tiny flowers and insects. All of this from one location and yet completely different perspectives and interest (or lack there of).
I will go into more depth on each of these subjects and how to frame those different nature photographs for the best WOW factor. In the mean time take a look at a few images at nature photography with a purpose photographs to get some idea.
